National Breastfeeding Awareness Week

National Breastfeeding Awareness Week (NBAW) is an annual event to raise aware- ness of the importance of breastfeeding and encourage health professionals and other groups to run events in their areas. Anita, Sajida and Joy represented the breastfeeding programme at Mothercare in the City Centre during Breastfeeding Awareness Week. This was a successful venue, which was supported by the managers and staff at Mothercare. They had a good response with many mothers asking for advice and support, as well as practical help being given to a mother who was having problems. Many women took part in the raffle to win several Mothercare products!

I would like to say a big thank you to all the members of the team – hospital and community, for all their hard work and to Mothercare for allowing us to use their venue and in providing the raffle prizes. Wehad various events throughout Breastfeeding Awareness Week. It was a great success and this was due to the whole team contributing and working well together. Sandra Speers, manager of the community peer support workers.

First time mums’ story

I am afirst time mum who has always wanted to breastfeed as I am aware of the benefits of doing it. I became engorged during the early stages of my breastfeeding and it was very sore and painful. Although I had this problem I was still determined to continue breastfeeding and wondered how I am going to overcome the pain of it as I had to feed my child no matter what.

Whilst still in hospital I was referred to see Mini from the breastfeeding peer support team. This visit was heaven sent as I was given plenty of advice, help and support about what to do in order to breastfeed successfully. I ended up using the breast pump which revealed a lot of breast milk which was stored over some time – I was advised how to store and use my breast milk.

Overall I was given tips about feeding and if I was unsure about anything, all of my questions and concerns were answered. I believe that the service is excellent and a lot of mothers will benefit from the help and advice that is given. It also helps if you speak to someone who understands what you are experiencing which Mini was as she is an excellent adviser and I believe that if all advisers are like her then the company will definitely get a lot of mothers that will beinterested. I will recommend this service to any mother that feels they need help and advice to breast feed. Miss Hillary Steward, Yardley Wood

The Handsworth team, committed to help

There is extensive evidence available to support the consensus that breastfeeding is the best way to feed a baby for a period of six months to a year. Mothers are also aware of this but find the demands of frequent feeding, attachment and positioning very difficult to maintain at times. We, the Handsworth Team of midwives are committed in ensuring that the women we care for have a positive and successful experience.

Kulvinder and Veron, our breastfeeding support workers help us to achieve this aim. We find the input in the antenatal and early postnatal period a great value to us and the women. The women’s self esteem and confident have improved especially amongst a group of women who would not normally be willing to discuss breast feeding openly. Thelma Crossman Barnes, Locality Manager and Supervisor of Midwives Handsworth/Handsworth Wood Team
